‘There Is No Insurrection!’ Oregon Governor Bashes Trump Sending Troops to Portland
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D) fumed over President Donald Trump’s decision to send federal troops into Portland as part of his nationwide crime crackdown, with Kotek publicly rebuking the president’s plan, just hours after he announced it on Saturday.
Here is what Kotek said about it at a press conference soon after:
“There is no insurrection. There is no threat to national security, and there is no need for military troops in our major city. Military service members should be dedicated to real emergencies. The members of the Oregon National Guard, their mission is to stand up and protect Oregonians, and they will do that everyday. But they are not needed in the city. They are not needed here.”
The 58-year-old Democrat’s response followed President Trump’s announcement he was directing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to deploy “all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland.” The president also said Hegseth should do what he can to protect “our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists.”
Kotek, of course, is not the first Democratic politician to complain about Trump’s use of the National Guard.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) have both made it clear they are not fans of Trump’s plan to send troops into Chicago. The president said his desire to go into Chicago increased after he saw how well the National Guard reduced crime in Washington, D.C. and after he was sickened by news reports on how many people were shot in The Windy City over Labor Day Weekend.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has also bashed the president’s use of the National Guard in recent months, including when troops were deployed to thwart violent protests in Los Angeles in June.
