‘Absolutely’: House Republican Answers Affirmatively When Asked, ‘Do You Think the Speaker Got Rolled in These Negotiations?’
CNN reporter Manu Raju asked Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) if Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is “at risk” of losing his job over a spending bill he will put to a vote.
On Thursday morning, congressional leaders released $1.2 trillion bill set to be voted on Friday morning that would – if also passed by the Senate and signed y the president – avert a government shutdown. The bill provides funding for the departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and State.
Some Republicans on Capitol Hill pushed back against the bill, directing their anger toward Johnson for not allowing lawmakers at least 72 hours to review all the material in the 1,012-page minibus.
“This is completely dysfunctional, but it’s well known process that has been plundering and more generic children’s future. This is this is what Washington is devolved into. It’s disgusting,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) told Raju on Thursday following the announcement.
Meanwhile the number two Republican in the Senate, Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) added, “There’s a better way to do this. We should have been doing appropriation bills a long time ago.”
Raju caught up with Davidson to ask if Johnson’s job is at risk. Davidson noted that when lawmakers decide the speaker next Congress “think this will factor into it”:
RAJU: Do you think the speaker got rolled in these negotiations?
DAVIDSON: Yeah, absolutely.
RAJU: Do you think that his job’s at risk?
DAVIDSON: I mean, you know, I don’t think near term, probably. But, you know, the question is, next Congress, who’s going to be the right person to be speaker? And I think this will factor into it.
