BREAKING: Israel and Hamas Agree to Ceasefire and Hostage Release, Officials Say

 

Israel and Hamas have reportedly struck a ceasefire and hostage release agreement that will end the conflict that has been ongoing for more than a year, according to multiple sources.

The proposed deal, which Reuters reported involves a six-week initial ceasefire and a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces also includes the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian detainees held by Israel.

The details are expected to be announced within hours, per an Arab official cited by the Times of Israel.

A U.S. official confirmed to Axios that both parties had reached a consensus on the terms.

Hamas has already communicated its approval of the deal to mediators in Qatar and Egypt, according to reports from Sky News, and the BBC. Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas leader, reportedly delivered the group’s acceptance in Doha.

While official confirmation is pending, the breakthrough signals a possible path toward reducing hostilities after weeks of devastating conflict.

In a statement obtained by Mediaite Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar is cutting short his diplomatic visit to Italy this evening following the progress in the release negotiations.

Sa’ar was scheduled to continue tomorrow in Hungary but will return to Israel tonight to participate in the expected discussions and votes in the Security Cabinet and government.
