Veteran journalist Carl Bernstein thinks President Trump has taken America to the brink of authoritarianism with his constant attacks on Robert Mueller‘s investigation.
The Watergate journalist joined CNN’s Brian Stelter on Sunday’s Reliable Sources, and he said that Trump’s non-stop attacks on the Russia investigation are setting troublesome precedents for the White House’s relationship with the rule of law:
“I think we can look at a big picture now with some real definition, in which the perilous moment for our country right now, and it’s a question of whether lies, authoritarianism and the character of the president of the United States are going to take us to an authoritarian place where we have never been in which he will bury a duly constituted and legal investigation that will determine whether or not the president is above the rule of law.”
Bernstein also expressed his view that Trump is trying to ruin Mueller’s credibility because the special counsel’s findings could be a lasting source of political embarrassment for him. The way Bernstein sees it, Mueller will probably be able to at least prove Trump’s tendency to lie, which could have major negative connotations even if Trump’s actions didn’t rise to the level of criminal behavior.
