CNN Cuts Off Ukraine Coverage for Something About a Red Carpet

The hilarious cutaway strikes again! Last night was Oscar night, and the Hollywood fever made its way over to CNN for a “Hollywood’s Biggest Night” special. And starting off the coverage led to an incredibly awkward cutaway from pretty serious news.

Retired Major General James “Spider” Marks was on CNN Sunday night talking about the ongoing crisis in Ukraine when Jim Sciutto jumped in so they could cut off the discussion about this big international news and cut right into Piers Morgan chatting with the stars.

In January, MSNBC had a similar moment when Andrea Mitchell cut away from an NSA discussion to some breaking Justin Bieber news.

UPDATE: While it’s funny to watch CNN transition from serious news to the red carpet coverage, we should note that the network has dedicated a serious amount of airtime to the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. For instance, reporters like Wolf Blitzer and Jim Sciutto have dedicated a large amount of time to covering the story on-air.
