CNN’s Jake Tapper No Longer Moderating Panel at Clinton Global Initiative

tapperCNN’s Jake Tapper will no longer moderate a panel discussion at the Clinton Global Initiative’s upcoming conference in Denver, Colo., to avoid a conflict of interest involving the recent coverage of its parent foundation’s controversies.

In addition, the Washington Post learned that CNN re-negotiated their deal with the Clinton Foundation to air that panel discussion, in the wake of a few scandals involving journalists not disclosing their donations to the Clinton Foundation. In previous years, networks would normally have to moderate and air one of the Foundation’s panels in exchange for a chance to interview Bill Clinton. But while Tapper will still interview Bill Clinton during the event — it’s Bill Clinton, after all, and his wife is in the news these days for some reason — the panel on workforce investment will instead be moderated by business reporter Poppy Harlow.

The panel’s description has also changed somewhat significantly — it’s no longer a “broadcast partner,” for instance — and CGI’s chief communications officer Craig Minassian acknowledged the changes to the Post. “The program still has the same coverage parameters but they asked us to modify how we positioned them – honestly results and coverage of our work are really more important to us than the language and positioning,” he said. “CNN’s been a very good partner for years.”
