CNN’s Kathleen Parker On “Raunchy” Navy Videos: “That’s Hostile”
CNN’s Kathleen Parker, co-host of Parker Spitzer, weighed in on the unfolding controversy over a series of “raunchy” shipboard videos shown to the crew of the Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise. The videos, produced by then-executive officer and now Navy Capt. Owen Honors, have been described as sexist and homophobic, leading the Navy to begin an investigation of the captain, who may not deploy with his ship when it sails to the Arabian Sea later this month.
On Monday night’s Parker Spitzer, retired Navy Commander Kirk Lippold (who was commanding the U.S.S. Cole at the time of the terrorist attack on the ship in 2000) called the push to relieve Honors of command a “snap judgment” that was driven “just to satisfy some social desire for political correctness.” Lippold urged the Navy to look at Honors’ entire career, and not just the videos.
That sparked criticism from CNN legal commentator Jeffrey Toobin and Parker, who blasted the captain’s conduct:
“That’s not just offensive, it’s hostile. That’s a hostile environment. If you’re a woman and you see–we didn’t show nearly what was in that film. There’s much worse scenes. That’s hostile. You don’t feel safe in that environment.”
