Colbert Trashes Justice Kennedy: ‘Don’t Tell Me Your Mind’s Going… You Never Had One!’
On Wednesday night, Stephen Colbert reacted to the announcement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy‘s retirement, and he wasn’t too thrilled about it.
“I never thought I’d say this… but you’re only 81!” Colbert exclaimed. “You know what they say, they say 81 is the new 79! And don’t tell me your mind’s going. Because I’ve read Bush v. Gore and Citizens United, you never had one!”
Colbert called the retirement of Justice Kennedy a “seismic political event” since he was the deciding vote in many SCOTUS rulings and the vacant seat gives President Donald Trump the opportunity to nominate a second conservative judge.
“Oh, we are supremely screwed,” Colbert told his audience. “I look forward to Wolf Blitzer in 2021, ‘In the end, this Supreme Court case will be decided by the swing vote, Justice Meatloaf.'”
The Late Show host blasted the recent SCOTUS rulings on labor unions, gerrymandering, and Trump’s travel ban and warned everyone to “enjoy your gay marriages now” because after July 31, “you’re back to being roommates.”
“I could see Trump appointing Giuliani just to keep him off television,” Colbert quipped.
He then took aim at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for saying that Trump’s nominee should be “treated fairly” after blocking President Obama‘s nomination of Merrick Garland in 2016.
