David Axelrod Scoffs at Wolf Blitzer’s Question About Who Will Win the Election: ‘I Would Be a Fool to Answer That’

CNN’s David Axelrod turned down an opportunity to predict the winner of the upcoming election between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday night.

Axelrod told network anchor Wolf Blitzer that, in his estimation, the race is so close that either candidate could come out on top. When offered an opportunity to forecast the result less than three weeks until Election Day, the veteran Democratic strategist said he viewed the race as a tossup.

On Friday’s edition of The Situation Room, Blitzer noted numerous polls have shown the 2024 race has tightened nationally and in the seven key battleground states to within the margin of error.

“We are taking a closer look at some of the polling that seems to be narrowing in some of the battleground states,” Blitzer said. “The election, as we all know, is still 18 days away.”

Blitzer asked, “But if it were being held today, who do you think would win?” Axelrod replied:

You know, Wolf, I would be a fool to answer that question because you’re talking about margins we have never seen before in polling, you get seven battleground states. I think the largest margin on the average is like two points and most of them are under one point when you look at polling averages. That’s just way too close to call. I don’t know, and it involves questions of organization.

For example, who has the strongest organizations in these battleground states and you know that’s an open question. I think that may be an edge for Democrats in those blue wall states because they’d been organizing for a long time, first for Biden and now for Harris, but with an infusion of new volunteers for Harris. But I wouldn’t hazard a guess and this is close enough so that any number of things may influence the outcome in the next 18 days.
