‘Devastating to New York’: House Democrat Tells Fox News Why He ‘Cannot Possibly Support’ Zohran Mamdani
Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) told Fox News’ John Roberts why he cannot possibly support New York City mayoral favorite Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday.
After a discussion about the ongoing government shutdown alongside his Problem Solvers Caucus co-chairman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Roberts noted that Suozzi had “broken” with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) by “endorsing Andrew Cuomo for mayor,” and subsequently asked: “Why did you make that choice?”
“I’m a democratic capitalist, not a democratic socialist, and I’m endorsing Andrew Cuomo. I cannot possibly support somebody who says-, declares he’s a socialist. He says he wants to raise taxes in New York, which would be devastating to New York,” answered Suozzi. “He doesn’t support a lot of different things that I think are very important for the state of New York and the country, so I couldn’t possibly support him.”
Roberts concluded the interview by musing that “it’s good to hear from reasonable people.”
Jeffries endorsed Mamdani last week after a months-long campaign to compel him to do so.
While he acknowledged “areas of principled disagreement” with the upstart, Jeffries told The New York Times that Mamdani had “relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy,” and that Democrats needed to unite in the face of an “existential” threat from President Donald Trump.
“In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election,” said Jeffries.
