Did Taylor Swift Take a Swipe at Kanye with Grammy Acceptance Speech?
Though she never mentioned the rapper’s name on stage last night, Taylor Swift‘s Album of the Year Grammy acceptance speech seemed to take some pointed shots at Kanye West, her on-off frenemy.
Swift beat out Kendrick Lamar‘s “To Pimp a Butterfly” with her hugely-successful “1989,” which makes Swift the first woman to have ever won the award twice. When Swift and her collaborators took the stage, she gave an encouraging speech for aspiring female musicians that had plenty of undertones directed at a certain someone.
“As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I wanna say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know that it was you and the people who love you that put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
Swift and West have had a frosty relationship with each other ever since the 2009 VMAs, where West infamously interrupted Swift during her award acceptance. The feud was recently given new life with West’s new song “Famous,” where in-between arguably misogynistic lyrics, West seems to take credit for catapulting Swift into fame.
It was reported that West said his lyrics were not meant to diss Swift, and that she approved of the inclusion of the lines before the album was published. Swift’s representation, however, say that she was instead asked to promote the song for him on Twitter, and that she warned him to reconsider the use of the lyrics.
