‘Excuse Me!’ MSNBC Guest Confuses Alaska With Russia, Hours After Trump Makes Same Mistake

Journalist Tara Palmeri confused Alaska with Russia on MSNBC just hours after President Donald Trump raised eyebrows for making the same mistake during a press briefing.

Reacting on Monday’s Katy Tur Reports to Trump’s upcoming meeting with Putin in Alaska to discuss the war in Ukraine, Palmeri said, “Here he is, sort of groveling, going to Russia to go– sorry, to, um– going to Alaska. Almost Russia. Excuse me!”

Host Katy Tur responded, “Donald Trump called it Russia earlier today, so you would be forgiven, Tara.”

“Yeah, exactly,” Palmeri concluded.

Hours before, Trump made the same mistake not once, but twice during a press briefing.

“It’s embarrassing for me to be up here. You know, I’m gonna see Putin. I’m going to Russia on Friday,” said Trump during the briefing. “I don’t like being up here talking about how unsafe and how dirty and disgusting this once beautiful capital was.”

Making the same mistake again, the president later told reporters, “It’s gonna be a big thing. We’re going to Russia. That’s going to be a big deal.”

The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867, and the territory received statehood in 1958.

Trump’s decision to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to Alaska received criticism from some social media users, including former U.S. ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul.

“Trump has chosen to host Putin in a part of the former Russian Empire,” he wrote. “Wonder if he knows that Russian nationalists claim that losing Alaska, like Ukraine, was a raw deal for Moscow that needs to be corrected.”
