Face The Nation‘s Bob Schieffer To Tiger Woods: ‘Stop Complaining’

“I told him it was a pleasure to meet a famous person who was just the way I thought he would be,” Bob Schieffer told baseball great Hank Aaron upon meeting him. Arnold Palmer was the same way, Schieffer remembered on Face the Nation this week. At this point, you know where Schieffer’s going with the story and that Tiger Woods probably doesn’t make the cut.

He then mentioned sportswriter John Feinstein‘s column from Friday’s Washington Post and an anecdote about Palmer and Woods discussing golf and fame after Woods won his first Masters at age 21:

“I can’t be a normal 21-year-old,” he said. “I have to sign autographs all the time, talk to the media after I play, do photo shoots for my sponsors. It just never ends.”

Normal 21-year-olds, Palmer explained, don’t have millions of dollars. “If you want to be normal,” he said, “give the money back.”

“As his life came apart last week, he was still complaining about being put upon, about not being able to lead a normal life,” Schieffer continued. “Sorry, Tiger. We all make mistakes, but if you wanted to be normal, you should’ve taken Arnie’s advice: just play golf with your friends on Saturdays, like the rest of us.”

“And I promise you,” he conclued, “no one would have cared what you did. Except maybe your wife.” I think they call that a senior citizen burn. Check out the video:
