Fox’s Martha MacCallum Gripes About ‘Out of Nowhere’ Question on Imprisoning Americans in El Salvador — But Trump Has Repeatedly Floated the Idea
Fox News’ Martha MacCallum complained about an “out of nowhere” question posed to President Donald Trump about his administration potentially imprisoning American citizens in El Salvador on Monday even though Trump himself has repeatedly floated the idea.
During an interview with border czar Tom Homan, MacCallum played a clip of a reporter observing that Trump had “mentioned that you’re open to deporting individuals that aren’t foreign aliens but are criminals to El Salvador,” and asking “Does that include potentially U.S. citizens fully naturalized in the area?” during a Q&A with El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, earlier in the day.
Trump professed to be “all for it,” saying that “if it’s a homegrown criminal, I have no problem.”
“Can you describe who would fall into that category and what the president was referring to there, Tom?” asked MacCallum.
” You know, Martha, I don’t know,” replied Homan. “I haven’t had that discussion with the president. I’ve been on the road. I just got home like an hour ago. So I haven’ had a discussion with the president or the DHS secretary. So I’m gonna have to pass on that question.”
“OK, that’s fine,” said MacCallum. “It sort of came out of nowhere, the question. So I wondered if you knew something that we didn’t know on that.”
But the question didn’t come “out of nowhere.” In fact, Trump himself has repeatedly expressed an interest in imprisoning American criminals in El Salvador.
Earlier this month, after he was asked about Bukele’s suggestion that he could take American prisoners for a fee, Trump remarked ” I love that. If we could take some of our 20-time wise guys that push people into subways and hit people over the back of the head and then purposely run people over in cars, if he would take them, I would be honored to give them.”
He continued:
I don’t know what the law says on that but I can’t imagine the law would say anything different. If they can house these horrible criminals for a lot less money than it costs us, I’m all for it. But I would only do according to the law.
But I have suggested that, you know, why should it stop just the people that cross the border illegally? We have some horrible criminals, American grown and born. And if we have somebody that bops an old woman over the head, if we have somebody that is in jail 20 times and goes back and shoots people all over the place, and then has a bad judge or a bad prosecutor that do nothing about them, all they worry about is politics, And don’t worry about that, I think if we could get El Salvador or somebody to take them I’d be very happy with it. But I have to see what the law says.
Then in a moment captured by cameras prior to the Q&A, Trump told Bukele that “the homegrowns are next.”
