Freddie Gray’s Family Speaks: Charges ‘Important Step in Getting Justice’

Richard Shipley, the stepfather of Freddie Gray, delivered a brief statement today on behalf of the family, in reaction to the charges filed against the six officers involved in his arrest and death.

Shipley called it an “important step in getting justice for Freddie,” but asked people to conduct themselves peacefully. He said, “If you are not coming in peace, please do not come at all… Without justice, there is no peace, but let us have peace in the pursuit of justice.”

Family attorney Billy Murphy also spoke about what the family has gone through, saying they want to “seize this opportunity to reform police departments throughout this country” to stop similar tragic incidents from happening.
