Garner Widow on Husband’s ‘Murder’: ‘Not a Black and White Thing’

Eric Garner’s widow Esaw Garner told Meet the Press Sunday that she believed her husband was “murdered unjustly” by the NYPD, and that it was the result of sustained police harassment of Garner’s selling of loosie cigarettes.

“I don’t even feel like it’s a black and white thing, honestly,” she said. “[The NYPD] knew him by name. They harassed him. And I would just say, ‘Eric, just keep walking. Don’t say anything. Don’t respond. You know? Don’t give them a reason to do anything to you.'”

Garner said that she now was having to “train her sons” to keep close to the house to avoid trouble, to the point that her youngest couldn’t go out trick-or-treating. “I’m so afraid of what could happen to them in the street by the police,” she said.
