Get A Room! Sean Hayes Tweaks Newsweek at the Tonys With Hot On-Stage Makeout

If you think Sean Hayes can’t convincingly play a romantic lead, then you didn’t see his wakka-wakka burning-hot kiss with Kristin Chenoweth at the top of the Tonys. So, we’ve helpfully provided it! Along with, I’m sure, many other sites, since it’s not just a kiss but a political statement contra one of the nation’s most august publications: Newsweek, which argued a few weeks back that the out-Hayes could not convincingly play a straight man hot for a lady.

We knew it was coming, and Tony did not disappoint — as evidenced by the comical yet undeniably sexy smooch between the two Promises, Promises stars (which Hayes punctuated with a casual pat on Chenoweth’s butt). As Chenoweth slinked off the stage, casting a sultry look back at her co-star, Hayes quipped: “I know what you’re thinking… she’s too short for me.” Zing! Everyone in that room — and probably most of the viewing audience — got the joke.

The rest of Hayes’ monologue lived up to that moment, with punchy laugh lines off Broadway themes and headlines (including an Arizona immigration joke) — and even a sports one-liner: “Welcome to the Tony Awards! The World Cup of Showtunes.” Hayes also doubled down on the political commentary (“You know what’s great? Broadway is a welcoming community, so tonight we’d like to send a shout-out to any closeted right-wing politicians watching the program in secret”) — and said of sexy Tony-winning View From The Bridge star Scarlett Johanssen, “I’d take a crack at that.” Ha.
