HBO Picks Up ‘Loud Music’ Shooting Trial Documentary at Sundance

HBO has acquired the new documentary 3 1/2 Minutes, which tells the story of the Jordan Davis and what became know as the “loud music” trial for what allegedly spurred Michael Dunn to shoot and kill the black teenager in Jacksonville, Florida in November 2012.

The film, directed by Marc Silver, had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this past week, after which HBO bought the U.S. television rights and will show it later this year after its theatrical release.

“I am grieved that these continuing stories are everyday matters swept away,” Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary Films said in a statement. “By bringing this powerful film to HBO audiences we hope to elevate the national conversation around these tragic issues.”

Michael Dunn, who fired 10 bullets at a car full of unarmed teens, was found guilty on three counts of attempted murder last February, but the jury in the case was not able to agree on a separate first-degree murder charge. In a subsequent retrial, the defendant was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
