House Republican Accuses Trump DOJ of ‘Hiding Behind’ a ‘Strawman’ to Avoid Releasing Epstein Files

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) accused President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice of using a “strawman” excuse for why it is not releasing its files relating to Jeffrey Epstein.

The DOJ this month concluded that Epstein did not have a client list that Attorney General Pam Bondi said he did when she claimed in February it was “sitting on my desk right now.” That development angered many Trump supporters, who hoped the administration would release damning information on powerful people. That hope was spurred on by comments from top administration officials, including Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, Deputy Director Dan Bongino, and Vice President JD Vance.

But those officials and Trump have backpedaled. The president, who was a friend of Epstein’s, has deflected questions about the matter and even lashed out at his own supporters for wanting more information.

Appearing on Sunday’s Meet the Press, Massie, who has sponsored legislation calling for the release of the files, was asked by Kristen Welker about the Department of Justice’s explanation as to why Epstein material is not forthcoming.

“I wanna read you a little bit of a DOJ memo, which writes, quote, ‘Sensitive information related to these victims is intertwined throughout the materials… One of our highest priorities is combating child exploitation and bringing justice to victims. Perpetuating unfounded theories about Epstein serves neither one of those ends.’ What is your response to the concern that releasing these files could ultimately hurt the victim, Congressman Massie?”

“That’s a strawman,” Massie responded, noting that his legislation would ensure victims’ names are redacted. “So, they’re hiding behind that. We’re trying to get justice for the victims and transparency for America.”

Massie has been engaged in a public spat with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who has followed Trump’s lead on the files.

“I don’t understand Thomas Massie’s motivation, I really don’t,” Johnson said on Tuesday. “I don’t know how his mind works, I don’t know what he’s thinking.”
