‘It’s Right There On the Tape’: MSNBC Reporter Fires Back After Tom Homan Calls Him ‘Dishonest’
MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff pushed back Monday after White House Border Czar Tom Homan accused him of deceptively editing an interview to suggest Homan had threatened to arrest Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom (D).
The dispute comes amid ongoing unrest in Los Angeles, where federal agents have clashed with protesters for days during mass immigration enforcement operations ordered by President Donald Trump.
The crackdown has drawn sharp criticism from local officials, including Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass. Both have accused the administration of escalating tensions.
Homan, who has defended the federal response, appeared Monday on Morning Joe and also Fox & Friends to discuss the situation on the ground in LA, as well as Bass and Newsom. On Fox News, he blasted Soboroff’s coverage of him saying he would arrest anyone he thought was impeding immigration enforcement efforts – including Newsom if he felt it necessary.
When asked about Newsom telling Soboroff he welcomed an arrest from Homan, the Trump administration’s immigration czar blasted the reporter.
“He’s a dishonest reporter. He took a 20-minute interview and chopped it up,” Homan said. “I never threatened to arrest the governor. I said nobody is above the law – but I also said they haven’t crossed a line.”
Hours later, Soboroff responded on Ana Cabrera Reports, airing full clips of both his interview with Homan and a follow-up exchange with Newsom.
“Tom Homan said we cut a clip and took his words out of context. We did anything but,” Soboroff said. “In fact, we presented the clips in their entirety in all of our airings, including on NBCNews.com.”
In the original interview, Soboroff asked Homan directly if figures like Newsom or Bass could be arrested for interfering with federal operations.
“If she crosses that line, we will ask DOJ to prosecute,” Homan said of Bass. “Do I think she’s crossed the line yet? I don’t think she’s crossed the line yet.”
Soboroff later told Newsom, “He did not rule out literally arresting you, nor Mayor Bass. He said you hadn’t yet.”
Newsom responded, “He knows where to find me.”
“It’s right there on the tape,” Soboroff told Ana Cabrera. “We were very clear in giving the full context—Homan said they hadn’t crossed a legal line but reserved the right to act if they did. That’s exactly what our reporting showed.”
