Jake Tapper Reports on Impression of ‘Bitter Partisanship’ and Exclusionary Tone of DeBlasio Inauguration

CNN host Jake Tapper reported on Wednesday at the conclusion of the inauguration of New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio that many left the ceremony with the impression that the new administration would be anything but inclusive. He reported on the feeling apparently shared by some, including former members of Mike Bloomberg’s administration, that DeBlasio’s inauguration sounded a note of “bitter partisanship.”

Tapper noted that DeBlasio and the various speakers at Wednesday’s inauguration ceremony appeared to be speaking “to his base” and “progressives” in New York City.

“A lot of times, inaugurals are times when people, when presidents, or mayors, or governors can reach out to critics, reach out to those who maybe didn’t vote for him,” Tapper added. “This was not that.”

Tapper cited former Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson who retweeted a journalist and critic of DeBlasio during the ceremony who attacked the new mayor for fostering a tone of “bitter partisanship.”

“It may be a window into how those in the Bloomberg administration view the tenor of the DeBlasio speech,” Tapper concluded.

“Usually a speech like this, we expect everyone, sort of, included,” CNN anchor Martin Savidge remarked. “This one had a different tone.”
