Katie Couric to Produce Comedy Series About Morning News

Katie Couric demonstrated her comedy chops in a throwback Super Bowl ad this year. And now, she is reportedly going to try her hand at producing a comedy series based on — what else? — the world of morning news.

Variety reported Wednesday that Couric is currently shopping an untitled series that would star Michelle Pfeiffer as the host of a Today show-like morning news program.

The show’s creator, Diane English, also created the news-centric sitcom Murphy Brown, which ran for 10 years starting in 1988.

According to the report, the team has reached out to both cable networks like HBO, Showtime and AMC as well as the streaming platforms Netflix and Amazon. Given its recent foray into original scripted comedy, Yahoo, which employs Couric as its global news anchor, is conspicuously missing from the list.

Couric’s potential series comes on the heels of another comedy set in the world of television news: Blunt Talk, starring Patrick Stewart as a cable news blowhard who appears to have a healthy competition going with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly.
