Key & Peele Accept Peabody Award: Comedy Is Important Tool Against ‘Injustice’

The 2014 Peabody Awards ceremony will air Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on Pivot, but before then, here’s a preview of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele accepting their award for their popular Comedy Central show Key & Peele. In the pair’s acceptance speech, they stressed the importance of comedy as a tool to fight back against the “injustices of the world.”
“At our show, we start with just the simple desire to want to get laughs, and somewhere in that journey to find the funny of the different things that we explore, I think we end up uncovering little pieces of truth almost by accident,” Peele said from the podium.
In a separate taped interview he added, “We really do feel like comedy is important and one of the most valuable tools we have against injustices in the world.”
While Key & Peele has perhaps become best known for its sketch featuring President Barack Obama and his anger translator Luther, the two biracial comedians have used the show over the last few years to push the boundaries of how comedy can tackle social issues.
