Larry Wilmore Welcome Ben Carson to 2016 Race: ‘Once You Go Black…’

The Nightly Show’s Larry Wilmore has titled his presidential campaign coverage, “Blacklash 2016: The Unblackening,” which made talking about Ben Carson’s entrance into the race a little awkward Monday night.

“We’re going to re-black?” the host asked. “Is his whole campaign based on, ‘Once you go black, you never go…?”

But while Wilmore predicted that former Baltimore-resident Carson would “capitalize” on the timing of the protests there to “score some points within the community,” he was ultimately disappointed. Speaking to CNN from Florida, Carson said, “I can only be in one place at one time” and confirmed that he has no plans to visit the beleaguered city.

As for Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who joked that he was happy his Amtrak train didn’t stop in Baltimore during the protests, Wilmore said those comments reminded him of a famous quote from President John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask how you can avoid the most troubled parts of your country.”
