Leaked Document Shows Debate Ground Rules Agreed Upon By Obama And Romney Campaigns

This morning we reported how TIME‘s Mark Halperin chronicled the various ways both the Obama and Romney campaigns are unhappy with tomorrow night’s debate moderator Candy Crowley for having said things that indicate she envisions herself playing a larger role than what the campaigns agreed upon.

Later in the day, Halperin released a document crafted by the Commission on Presidential Debates in conjunction with the two campaigns.

The memo, called a “memorandum of understanding,” sets the agreed-upon ground rules for what the debate moderators are expected to do.

Among the rules laid out: Crowley is not supposed to ask any follow-ups, may not “coach” audience members who ask questions, and is not supposed to conduct “show of hands”-style audience questions.

The CPD document also promises to lock down the TV cameras as a means to limiting the amount of angles available. Audience reaction shots are also forbidden.
