MAGA CNN Guest Doesn’t Even Try Defending Trump for Screening Soldiers’ Politics: ‘You Can’t Spin Everything’

A Republican strategist earned kudos from CNN’s Abby Phillip for not mustering a defense of President Donald Trump in the wake of what she called an “alarming” report.

Trump spoke to soldiers at Fort Bragg on Tuesday in what was essentially a political rally where the president railed against his political opponents. At one point, he encouraged the soldiers in uniform to boo “the fake news.”

It turns out that many of the soldiers in attendance had been screened for both their politics and their physical appearance, according to Military.com, which reported:

Internal 82nd Airborne Division communications reviewed by Military.com reveal a tightly orchestrated effort to curate the optics of Trump’s recent visit, including handpicking soldiers for the audience based on political leanings and physical appearance. The troops ultimately selected to be behind Trump and visible to the cameras were almost exclusively male.

One unit-level message bluntly said “no fat soldiers.”

“If soldiers have political views that are in opposition to the current administration and they don’t want to be in the audience then they need to speak with their leadership and get swapped out,” another note to troops said.

Phillip quoted from the report on Friday’s CNN NewsNight and asked GOP operative Pete Seat for his reaction.

“Yeah, so I don’t know what to say to that,” Seat replied before referencing a poll about Trump’s decision to hold a military parade in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. “So I’m going to pivot to the poll.”

“You know what?” Phillip said, interrupting. “I’m gonna give you points for honesty because you definitely could’ve tried to spin it, but you didn’t, which I appreciate.”

Seat let out a sigh of resignation and said, “You can’t spin everything, Abby.”
