Man Files Lawsuit Against Slager for Allegedly Tasering Him Without Provocation
Mario Givens, a North Charleston man who had filed an excessive force complaint against police officer Michael Slager, announced in a press conference today that he plans to sue the city’s police department in the wake of the death of Walter Scott.
The Guardian reports that Givens, who filed a complaint in 2013 alleging that Slager dragged him out of his house one morning and shot him with a Taser, had been afraid to come forward when the police dismissed his claim, but was put in contact with a lawyer shortly after footage emerged of Slager shooting Scott multiple times. (Givens had been confused with his brother, whom the police were searching for, and was not charged with any crimes after the incident.)
“In Mr Scott’s case we only have a video and a dead witness, but today we have a live witness,” said his attorney, Eduardo Curry, adding that Givens suffered injuries as a result of the incident.
