Michigan GOP Describes Baltimore’s Black Mayor as ‘Colored’
The Michigan Republican Party used the word “colored” to describe Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott (D) in a social media post on Thursday while also calling him a communist.
Earlier this week, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed when a massive cargo ship lost power and struck one of the structure’s pillars, causing the bridge to collapse. Six people fell into the water. Two bodies have been recovered and the other four people are presumed dead.
Rather than wait for an investigation into the incident to uncover the cause, right-wing social media accounts immediately suggested the blame should be placed on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, which have become a go-to conservative culprit to explain everything from the bridge collapse to Boeing’s spate of harrowing incidents aboard its airplanes.
A prominent account on X/Twitter that has been engaged with and boosted by Elon Musk referred to Scott, who is Black, as “Baltimore’s DEI mayor.”
The mayor responded to such vitriol during an appearance on Wednesday’s edition of TheReidOut on MSNBC:
I know, and we all know, and you know very well that Black men, and young Black men in particular have been the bogeyman for those who are racist and think that only straight, wealthy White men should have a say in anything. We’ve been the bogeyman for them since the first day they brought us to this country. And what they mean by “DEI,” in my opinion, is duly-elected incumbent.
We know what they want to say, but they don’t have the courage to say the n-word. And the fact that I don’t believe in their untruthful and wrong ideology, and I’m very proud of my heritage and who I am, and where I come from, scares them. Because me being at my position means their way of thinking, their way of life, and being comfortable, and why everyone else suffers is going to be at risk. And they should be afraid because that’s my purpose in life.
On its official X/Twitter account, the Michigan GOP seized on Scott’s remarks, portrayed them as threatening, and described Scott as “colored.”
“Another shining example of ‘colored communism’ in America,” the account wrote as it quote-tweeted the infamous Libs of TikTok account.
