MSNBC’s Dyson Advises Christian Tolerance Due to Possible ‘Homoerotic’ Narratives in Bible
It’s the holiday season – tis the time to parse religious texts in order to isolate passages that validate modern political grievances. In that tradition, MSNBC contributor Michael Eric Dyson offered The Ed Show’s fill-in host, Joy-Ann Reid, his interpretation of the Bible which he said shames bigoted Christians because of the regular homoeroticism within that text.
In a conversation about the remarks about gays and lesbians, as well as African-Americans, which landed Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson in hot water last week, Dyson advised LGBT rights activists to “link their fate” to that of blacks. Dyson said that, ultimately, these two groups share the same struggle.

He added, however, that anti-gay Christians are mistaken in their opposition to homosexuality. After attacking the anti-Semitism of “many of the Christians” as “ironic,” he noted that the untrained observer could be forgiven for seeing “homoerotic” themes in the Bible.
He cited a passage in which the figure he cites is recorded as saying, “I love him more than I love her.”
“Hmm,” Dyson pondered. “Do you really? That sounds interestingly homoerotic to people who are outside your religious traditions.”
“I’m not suggesting it is, but I’m suggesting that there are some very interesting narrative tensions within the Bible itself and within Christianity beyond that,” Dyson concluded.
