MSNBC’s Irin Carmon: Hobby Lobby Ruling ‘All-Out Assault’ on Contraceptives
So what exactly will the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby ruling do for women’s reproductive rights? According to MSNBC reporter Irin Carmon, the case essentially cratered those rights.
“I think you’re going to see a lot of disappointment,” she said to Craig Melvin. “Just because it was only restricted to women’s health doesn’t mean it doesn’t create a devastating effect that says, ‘Women’s health care should be treated differently.’
Calling the ruling “an all-out assault on contraceptives,” Carmon shot down the notion suggested by Justice Anthony Kennedy that the government could step in and provide access to contraception when employers would not.
“There’s a program called Title X that gives low-income people birth control, and they said, ‘Well, why don’t you just do it through that?'” she explained. “Well, guess what? The Republican Party is trying to get rid of Title X!”
