MSNBC’s Jen Psaki Accuses Trump of ‘Escalation’ for Calling Out Those Who Called Charlie Kirk a Nazi

MSNBC host and former Democratic operative Jen Psaki took time out of her show on Wednesday night to tsk-tsk President Donald Trump over his reaction to the assassination of his friend, Charlie Kirk.

In a video statement released after Kirk’s death on Wednesday, Trump said the following:

It’s long past time for all Americans and the media to confront the fact that violence and murder are the tragic consequence of demonizing those with whom you disagree day after day, year after year, in the most hateful and despicable way possible. For years, those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals. This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today and it must stop right now.

Psaki took umbrage to this statement on her show.

“It’s so challenging for a million reasons right now, and I would just want to say first, we don’t know who the shooter is. We don’t know what their motivation is because they’re still at large. It’s a very scary time for the people in that community right now. And President Trump, this was somebody he knew personally, I will acknowledge, and obviously is impacted by,” began Psaki, adding:

But he put out a four-minute video, and I’m not going to play the video, I don’t want to play the video. But there was a line at the end that I think is, I just wanted to raise and read. At the end of this four-minute video, he says, ‘For years, those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals. This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today, and it must stop right now.

“And obviously there’s a lot of rhetoric that is problematic. A lot of it is coming from one particular side and from one particular building,” added Psaki. “But what can be done, I fear, when this is an escalation already in less than 24 hours of this shooting.”

“Yeah, I think historically, presidents have looked for opportunities to bring people together. You know, right now, we need a president that will bring the country together and not try to further, you know, divide us,” replied Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ). “People say things, regretful things. You know I’ve seen it. I’ve seen, you know, Democrats in the Senate say things where I thought were over a line. I’ve seeing Republicans do the same thing. Perpetuating this kind of thing is just not helpful. You know, I hope in the coming days the president looks at this as an opportunity to unite us rather than to divide us.”
