Perplexed Jake Tapper Asks GOP Strategist About Trump’s Arnold Palmer Shower Story: ‘How Many Voters Does That Get You?’
Jake Tapper said he has “never heard anything like” what former President Donald Trump told a rally crowd on Saturday.
Speaking in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Trump told a lengthy story about the late legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, who was born in the town.
“And I refuse to say it. But when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there. They said, ‘Oh my God. That’s unbelievable,’” Trump said, referring to Palmer’s penis.
On Monday’s edition of The Lead, Tapper expressed amazement at what the former president said.
“[L]et’s just take the Arnold Palmer anecdote that he told yesterday about, I’ll just say… people seeing Arnold Palmer naked in the shower and being impressed,” Tapper said to Republican operative Kristin Davison. “Now, I’ve never heard anything like that. I’m not offended. I don’t care. But I do wonder, how many voters does that get you of the people that are in this undecided pool?”
“Well, I think the undecided pool is shrinking,” she replied, responding to the question with a straight face. “We really don’t have that many undecided voters. It’s really, are you going to vote or you’re not? This is really becoming the Stranger Things election. We have two different realities going on. We have one campaign that’s running to win people to the team, to persuade them. We have another campaign that is really just trying to gin up base turnout. And so, in that instance, I don’t think it wins over the Nikki Haley voter.”
Davison noted that Vice President Kamala Harris recently quoted Ronald Reagan as a way of reaching out to Republican voters who have soured on Trump, but haven’t been won over by Harris.
“The Bernie Sanders voters just– they already know it’s a wink, wink, nudge, nudge, ‘Let her get through this,'” Davison said of Harris’s strategy.
