Trump Appears Painfully Bored as Putin Drones On and On
President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday and held a press conference in which Putin spoke first, even though the summit was held on U.S. soil.
Trump, Putin, and their respective aides met behind closed doors in Anchorage to discuss Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, which Trump pledged to end within a day of taking office. Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited. In February 2022, Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine to overthrow the Zelensky government, but Russian forces have faltered.
Trump stated that there is not yet an agreement between the U.S. and Russia, let alone one that Ukraine would sign onto.
Trump and Putin walked on stage together in front of scores of reporters. In a very surprising and unusual breach of custom, the visiting leader spoke first.
Speaking in Russian, Putin offered some pleasantries and launched into his remarks, which went on for nearly nine minutes. As he spoke, Trump looked bored, if not exhausted, as he listened to the Russian leader after a six-hour flight from Washington, D.C. to Anchorage.
“Our negotiations have been held in a constructive atmosphere of mutual respect,” Putin began. “We had very thorough negotiations that were quite useful. I would like to thank once again my American counterpart for the proposal to travel out here to Alaska. It only makes sense that we’ve met here because our countries, though separated by the oceans, are close neighbors.”
Putin then went into a digression about the Russian Empire’s former territorial claims on the North American continent and Soviet-American cooperation during World War II.
As he spoke, Trump looked straight ahead, looking overcome with ennui and/or fatigue.
In his remarks, Putin echoed a longtime Trump talking point, stating that he would not have invaded Ukraine on Trump’s watch.
When it was Trump’s turn to speak, the president announced, “We didn’t get there” on a deal.
