Rick Perry: Alcee Hastings Is Right, Texas Is Crazy
Former Texas Gov. and potential 2016 presidential candidate Rick Perry (R) responded on Thursday night to Congressman Alcee Hastings‘ (D-FL) anti-Texas chatter — but not in a way that you would expect.
“Earlier this week there was this liberal congressman from Florida and he called Texans crazy,” Perry said during a speech at an American Principles Project event. “He is right! We are crazy!”
He continued, rather enthusiastically: “We’re crazy about jobs, we’re crazy about opportunity, we’re crazy about liberty, we’re crazy about the Constitution!”
During a House Rules Committee hearing on Monday regarding the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Hastings called Texas a “crazy state” that he would not live in “for all the tea in China.” This turned Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) the wrong way, who demanded an apology immediately. Hastings would not oblige, and said Burgess would have to wait until “hell freezes over” for an apology.
The exchange was the subject of a Daily Show segment about the immaturity of some members of Congress, and one country singer threatened to “open up a cowboy bootshop in [Hasting’s] behind.”
