Rumsfeld Shrugs Off Bush Sr’s Reported Clinton Support: ‘He’s Up in Years’
Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld decided to bring up George H. W. Bush‘s age when asked if it concerned him that the former president is reportedly planning to vote for Hillary Clinton.
MSNBC spoke with Rumsfeld to get his reasons for supporting Donald Trump, and eventually, Stephanie Ruhle asked him how he felt about the father of his former boss, George W. Bush, being the latest GOPer to break away from the the party’s candidate. Rumsfeld said Bush’s decision didn’t surprise him, and when Ruhle asked him why, his response was “Oh, he’s up in years.”
Rumsfeld is only 8 years behind the former president at the age of 84, so it was with a chuckle that Ruhle responded with “So are you!”
“He’s up in years, and he obviously comes from a totally different cut than Donald Trump, and he gets his choice,” Rumsfeld answered back. He went on to say that while he’s not completely comfortable with Trump’s rhetoric and antics, he thinks the mogul would make an acceptable president because “I think he’s not untruthful.”
The elder Bush doesn’t have the best relationship with Rumsfeld, seeing as how the former president once criticized him as an “arrogant fellow” who did a poor job of serving his son during his presidential run. Bush’s decision also drew the ire of the Trump campaign, who chalked it up to “hurt feelings” that remained from Jeb Bush‘s defeat.
