Sen. Blumenthal Decries Justice Department’s Failure to Appear at Hearing on FBI’s Botched Larry Nassar Probe: ‘I Am by No Means Satisfied’

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) decried members of the Department of Justice for failing to show up to the Senate hearing on the FBI’s botched investigation into Larry Nassar.

While FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday — apologizing to the women Nassar abused due to the Bureau’s failures — no members of the main federal executive department were present.

“The jury is still out on whether it’s going to be sufficient in terms of the reforms made already and we’re going to be monitoring it,” Blumenthal said during a press conference following the hearing. “We have a responsibility to watch closely, and all of the reforms can be strengthened and we may well need to strengthen it. ”

The senator was then asked if he was “satisfied” with Wray’s testimony, prompting him to vow that he will be “demanding more of the FBI, but even more important, of the Department of Justice.

“The Department of Justice was a no-show; the Department of Justice failed to appear,” Blumenthal said. “They have responsibility ultimately for the FBI, for the prosecutions, and for action here.”

“They should be answering many of the questions,” he continued. “I am by no means satisfied with what I heard today.”
