Sen. Blumenthal on Political Tone: Trump’s ‘Vehement Attacks’ Are Part of the Problem

There’s been a lot of discussion since the horrific shooting at the GOP baseball practice yesterday about whether the tone of our political discourse is getting too out of control. And some of that conversation has been about President Trump‘s contribution to that.

The Alexandria shooter was a big Bernie Sanders fan and hated Republicans––and he asked if it was Republicans or Democrats playing before he opened fire––but both parties have been talking about the need to calm down the rhetoric.

At least two Republicans today said the president could do more to help calm it down, and Senator Richard Blumenthal––a Democrat Trump has singled out on Twitter before––also weighed in on CNN tonight:

“We need to seize this moment and tone down the rhetoric… Part of the problem is that the president is continuing the very visceral and vehement attacks instead of saying, as my colleague Senator Rubio said, that he welcomes a swift result and a fair result to this investigation.”

Trump tweeted today that there’s a “witch hunt” going on against him and asked why Hillary Clinton and the Democrats’ ties to Russia aren’t being investigated.
