Shep Smith Says Trump ‘Misrepresented the Truth’ About Australian PM Call: ‘The Media Did Not Lie’
A recently leaked transcript published in the Washington Post shows a conversation between President Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull where Trump tells Turnbull that he finds their interaction very “unpleasant.”
After a contentious conversation about refugees, Trump said to Turnbull, “I have had it. I’ve been making these calls all day and this is the most unpleasant call all day. Putin was a pleasant call. This is ridiculous.”
The conservation between the two world leaders was not a complete secret until the Post’s report.
Prior to the recent release of transcripts, media outlets had reported on aspects of the conversation between the President and his Australian counterpart, including the remarks made by Trump about the “ridiculous” nature of their call.
On Thursday afternoon, Fox News’ Shepard Smith said that he, along with other media outlets, reported on the conversation between the leaders and that Trump referred to it as the “worst call of the day.”
“This news hour reported at the time, back in February, that President Trump said the conversation with the Australian Prime minister was the worst call of the day. We reported that,” he said.
“We reported at the time the President said the Putin call was pleasant but that this one, with the Prime Minister of Australia, was ridiculous,” Smith added. We reported that.”
Then Smith reminded us that following the initial reports, Trump tweeted that the conversation with Turnbull was “very civil” and accused the reports of being “fake news.”
“The media did not lie. We reported the truth,” said Smith. “Then President Trump misrepresented the truth, and not for the first time.”
