Sotomayor To Become Next Week’s Michael Jackson, Save Journalism

According to TVEyes.com, there were more than 20,000 mentions of “Michael Jackson” yesterday. There won’t be as many, but expect to hear a lot of “Sonia Sotomayor” on every channel come Monday, as Pres. Obama’s first Supreme Court nominee begins her confirmation hearings.

The hearings start at 10amET, and some networks are already announcing coverage plans. Expect huge coverage online as well, with live streaming of the full hearings happenings on all the news Web sites.

With the huge Supreme Court (and Congress) focus, expect correspondents and pundits specializing in each to move way up the Power Grid.

The Sotomayor hearings won’t have the global impact of Jackson’s death and memorial, but in a news cycle running on warp speed, expect a saturation on the cablers similar to the King of Pop coverage.
