Stephen Colbert Lays Claim to Coming Up With ‘Gulf of America’ First: ‘Trump Steals All My Ideas’

Stephen Colbert argued he should be given some credit for President Donald Trump’s decision to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” on Tuesday.

In one of the more surprising moves to begin his presidency, Trump made clear his intentions to rename the international body of water. He’s even gone as far as barring The Associated Press from covering White House events due to the outlet’s refusal to use the new name.

On Tuesday’s edition of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host had actor George Clooney on to discuss Good Night, and Good Luck, the Broadway production starring Clooney as famed broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow. During their conversation, Colbert posed a question.

“Would Murrow say, ‘Gulf of America?” Colbert asked. “Or would Murrow say, ‘Gulf of Mexico?'”

Just then, Clooney had a thought.

“By the way, didn’t you first say, ‘Gulf of America’?” the actor responded.

As it turns out, Clooney was right. Colbert went on to explain a joke he told on the Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report.

“My old character on the old show claimed it as the ‘Gulf of America,'” he said. “It was after the oil spill in the Gulf. I said, ‘We broke it, we bought it. It’s the Gulf of America now.'”

Clooney then quipped that “there’s no new ideas,” prompting Colbert to add that “Trump steals all my ideas.”

“And you better lawyer up, motherfucker,” Colbert added. “Because I’m coming for you.”
