Trump Says He Actually Enjoys Talking to Reporters: ‘It’s Like Winning at Golf’
President Donald Trump took questions from reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, and immediately explained that he likes it because it’s like winning a round of golf.
Trump headed to Anchorage for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a potential framework for ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited. The U.S. and Russian presidents met for nearly three hours on Friday while flanked by their respective aides. At a press conference afterward, Trump said there is no agreement in place yet.
Hours before the summit, Trump took questions from reporters aboard Air Force One and sat down for an interview with Bret Baier of Fox News’s Special Report.
One reporter asked Trump, “You had said earlier this week that Putin would face severe consequences if you get the sense from him that he’s not interested. What do you mean by that?”
“Economically severe, yes,” Trump replied. “It will be very severe. I’m not doing this for my health, ok? I don’t need it. I’d like to focus on our country, but I’m doing this to save a lot of lives. Yeah, very severe. Thank you very much, everybody.”
Trump left the plane’s press area to where Baier was waiting.
“Do you like doing those things?” Baier asked.
“It’s almost like a competition,” the president responded. “It’s like winning at golf. You know, they’re coming in, every question is a kill. They hope you’re gonna make a mistake. They’re looking– they had a field day with Biden, that’s why he didn’t do it.”
“Did you make any news there?” Baier asked.
“I don’t think so,” Trump said. “I always go out, I say, ‘Is there breaking news?’ In other words, when I leave, if there’s breaking news, that’s a bad thing. That means they got me on something.”
