Trump Says He Hasn’t Been Briefed on Russian Fighter Jets Breaching NATO Airspace: ‘I’ll Have To Take a Look’

Many hours after Russian fighter jets breached the airspace of Estonia, a NATO member, President Donald Trump indicated he had yet to be briefed on the matter.

On Friday, three Russian MiG-31 jets violated Estonian airspace for about 12 minutes. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the jets were “forced to flee” after being confronted by Finnish, Italian, and Swedish fighter jets.

The drama comes amid Russia’s escalating airstrikes on Ukraine, which Russia invaded in February 2022.

Hours later, Trump took questions from reporters in the Oval Office, where one of them asked if he considered Russia’s actions that morning to be a threat.

“Do you see that as a threat to NATO?” the reporter inquired.

“Well, I’m gonna have to look at it,” the president responded. “They’re gonna be briefing me in a short while. So, I’ll let you know about it tonight or tomorrow.”

The reporter was in the process of asking a follow-up about the incursion when Trump interrupted.

“Well, I don’t love it,” the president said. “I don’t love it when that happens. Could be big trouble. But I’ll let you know later. They’re gonna brief me in about an hour.”

U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker appeared on Fox Business on Friday morning, shortly after the news about the airspace breach broke.

“But, you know, I think the Russian threat sometimes is a little overstated. They have not had a lot of success,” Whitaker stated. “And so, you know, to me, that points to a weakness in Russia. As their economy continues to falter, I believe their continuation of this war is going to be difficult.”
