While a whole lot of attention was being paid to what NFL players would be doing while the national anthem played today, there were actual games that were played. And at the end of the first half of this afternoon’s Chicago Bears-Pittsburgh Steelers contest, we likely witnessed the dumbest play we’ll see all season.
With only six seconds left on the clock, Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell lined up for a short field goal to cut Chicago’s lead down to four. However, the Bears blocked the kick and special teamer Marcus Cooper retrieved the ball and ran towards the end zone for what seemed like a sure Bears touchdown.
But, for some inexplicable reason, Cooper slowed down in the final few yards, looking to waltz across the goal line. As he took his leisurely stroll, a Steelers player came from behind him and punched the ball out of his hands before he made it into the end zone.
The ball was batted out of end zone by the Steelers, leading the referees to eventually give the ball back the Bears at the one-yard line, where they were able to kick a field goal at the end of the half.
Over on Twitter, the consensus was that Cooper was an idiot:
What an idiotic play by Marcus Cooper. Costs his team 7 points. Get him off the field & keep him off the field. Horrendous.

Marcus Cooper should be cut immediately. There is zero excuse for that play & no room for that on this team. #Bears
