WATCH: Colbert and Steve Carell Sing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ on Perfect Harmony

With the news that Stephen Colbert will be replacing David Letterman on CBS’ Late Show next year comes a newfound interest in those precious few moments when the host has stepped out of his Colbert Report character and showed the world who he really is.

Now, thanks to one intrepid Redditor, we have this video of Colbert signing “The Star-Spangled Banner” with his old friend Steve Carell during a 2008 press junket for Get Smart. The pure joy that Colbert injects into his patriotic harmonies shows not only that he’s capable of shedding the irony for something genuine, but also that he can give new rival Jimmy Fallon a run for his money any day in the musical department.
