WATCH LIVE: House Debates and Votes on Keep Your Health Plan Act
On Friday afternoon, House lawmakers are scheduled to debate and vote on a bill that would permit insurance companies to continue selling existing policies that fall short of new standards under the Affordable Care Act.
The so-called “keep your plan fix” was introduced Thursday afternoon by lawmakers as a response to growing outcry over Americans losing their insurance plans as a result of the new Obamacare laws.
This particular bill, the “Keep Your Health Plan Act,” was introduced by Michigan Republican Fred Upton.
Millions of Americans received cancellation letters over the past month, despite the administration’s repeated promises that “if you like your plan, you can keep it.” Under the Upton proposal, consumers opting to keep their existing plans wouldn’t face any penalties enforced by Obamacare. Insurers would then be allowed to sell their minimal plans to new customers. The bill is will easily pass the GOP-controlled House; but faces a tough challenge from Democrats in the Senate as well as the president.
