WATCH: Trump’s ICE Director Offers Devastating Pause When Asked if Family Separation is ‘Humane’

On Tuesday, acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Thomas Homan appeared on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer to discuss the dominant news story of the week, separation of children from their parents at the U.S. southern border.

The entire discussion was interesting, but especially notable was Homan’s refusal to characterize current policy as “humane,” which Shareblue’s Tommy Christopher highlighted on Twitter.

“From your perspective, and I know you’ve got a distinguished career in law enforcement, and we’re grateful for the important work you did,” Wolf said. “But is this new zero-tolerance policy that the president has supported that the Attorney General announced, is it humane?”

Homan paused slightly before replying “I think that.. I think — I think it’s the law.”

Wolf pressed again. “It may be the law, it’s the policy, but is it humane?”

Homan paused longer the second time, before again refusing to call it humane. “I think it’s the law, and I’m in law enforcement, and I must follow the law.”

He then characterized the actions of parents attempting to smuggle their children into the United States as being inhumane. “We take good very care of these kids,” he added, “and we spend a lot of money, a lot of taxpayer money is spent taking care of these families, taking care of these kids.”
