Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press this morning to discuss the White House’s response to the Rob Porter domestic abuse scandal, White House legislative director Marc Short explained away President Donald Trump’s tendency to side with men accused of abusive behavior by saying Trump has been falsely accused himself.
Host Chuck Todd played a montage of Trump defending men such as Mike Tyson, Roger Ailes and Roy Moore regarding accusations of sexual misconduct. With the president having stated that Porter “says he’s innocent” while wishing him a “wonderful career,” Todd wanted to know if the president believes that Porter is innocent of abusing his ex-wives.
“I think the president is shaped by a lot of false accusations against him in the past, Chuck,” Short responded. “But in talking to the president, he’s very disturbed about what happened to Rob, he’s very disappointed and I believe he thinks the resignation is appropriate.”
Echoing what White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said today, Porter went on to say that Trump has “full confidence” in Chief of Staff John Kelly, who has come under fire for his handling of the situation. It has been reported that Kelly has indicated that he’d be willing to resign while Trump has been calling others to get their advice on Kelly’s potential replacements.
