White House Issues First Public Comment on Indiana Law

In its first public comment on Indiana’s controversial new Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the Obama Administration, as expected, denounced the law which critics say opens the door to anti-LGBT discrimination.

“This piece of legislation flies in the face of the values that people all across the country strongly support,” Press Secretary Josh Earnest said on Tuesday, adding Gov. Mike Pence (R) seems to be in “damage control.”

After Indiana Republican lawmakers said on Monday they are working to “fix” the law, Pence said at a press conference Tuesday morning that he wants that fix “on my desk this week.”

Earnest mentioned the business leaders who have expressed concern about the law, namely that their employees and customers “could be subjected to greater discrimination just because of who they love.” As a result, Earnest said, the law is not “fair,” nor “consistent with our values as a country that we hold dear.” He said the subsequent outcry is why Pence is considering a change to the law.
