‘Who Lied?’: Chuck Todd Revisits Post-9/11 Iraq War Run-Up with Wolfowitz
On the anniversary of 9/11 today, Chuck Todd revisited the post-9/11 run-up to the Iraq War with the man considered to be that war’s architect, Paul Wolfowitz.
Wolfowitz said that if Sadaam Hussein had not been toppled, Iraq could have been “Syria on steroids” and he would have been “more brutal than Assad.”
Todd challenged him on that characterization and brought up how he misled the world about WMDs. Wolfowitz insisted he was “sheltering a lot of bad guys” and had to be dealt with.
But then came the big question that many Americans have been asking for years: why did we go into Iraq and not “hold Saudi Arabia accountable” when Saudi nationals flew those planes?
Wolfowitz said of Saudi Arabia, “They’re cultivating terrorists ideologically but you don’t deal with that by going to war.”
He also scolded people who say that “Bush lied.” But then Todd jumped in:
“Who lied? Was it bad intelligence? Somebody got us into this and somebody convinced the United States Congress that weapons of mass destruction were imminent.”
