Wife of Man Imprisoned in El Salvador By ‘Error’ Speaks Out – As Noem Says They Should Be Jailed ‘For Rest of Their Lives’

The wife of the man the Trump administration deported and has indefinitely imprisoned in El Salvador’s notorious gang prison spoke out this week in various interviews.

MSNBC anchor Ana Cabrera noted on Wednesday, “Also still waiting for the Supreme Court to rule on the case involving Kilmar Abrego Garcia, that Maryland father who was wrongfully deported as the administration admits was almost a month ago. Now he was sent to that prison in El Salvador. His future remains in limbo. I spoke with his wife earlier today, take a listen.”

“I want them to bring him back. I want to know when they will bring him back,” Jennifer Vasquez told Cabrera.

“Because my kids asked. When is he coming? I don’t have an answer,” she added.

Cabrera then asked NBC News’s Julia Ainsley for the latest on the case, noting, “She says she hasn’t had any contact with her husband since he was deported to El Salvador. What do we know about Abrego Garcia’s status? And given the administration admits they messed up here by deporting him, is the expectation that he will eventually be released and brought back to the US?”

Ainsley replied, “Yeah, and that’s one of the things that makes this prison so notorious for being so high security. They don’t allow anyone to communicate with their lawyers or their families or anyone outside the prison while they’re in there. They’re even told to keep silent in their cells.”

“At this point, it doesn’t look like there is any movement to bring him back immediately. A judge had ruled that he needed to be brought back by midnight on Monday. Then the Supreme Court lifted, put an administrative stay on that, but that is temporary. And so really the Supreme court could rule any minute now on whether or not to vacate that judge’s order to bring him back. All they said is you don’t have to meet the midnight deadline. We haven’t yet heard from them whether or the entire order to bring him at all could be lifted,” Ainsley concluded.

Vasquez also spoke to ABC News on Thursday, saying, “He’s never been convicted for anything” – refuting the Trump administration’s claim Garcia is a gang member.

“Everything they are saying is wrong,” she added. “My husband is a loving father, and what I know is that he’s an amazing husband, an amazing father. That’s who he truly is.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Wednesday, “We’re confident that people that are [imprisoned in El Salvador] should be there, and they should stay there for the rest of their lives.” Notably, the Trump administration previously said that Garcia was deported as a result of an “administrative error” as he had been granted “protected status” in the U.S. by a judge, meaning he could not be deported back to El Salvador for fear for his safety. The administration, however, continues to maintain Garcia was a gang member.
